High Green

A proper Norfolk woodland that doesn't get mobbed like some of the more famous nature reserves. High Green is a straightforward forest walk east of Fakenham, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of tour groups. The trees are dense enough to feel like proper escape - Douglas firs and pines mixed with native broadleaves - and the paths are well-maintained without being over-engineered.

It's ideal for families wanting an afternoon ramble without the National Trust postcode crowds, and walkers will find the terrain gentle enough for most abilities. Birdwatchers absolutely should come here; the woodland canopy makes it a magnet for species you won't spot in open countryside. Allow two hours for a decent loop, maybe half that if you're just nipping in for a short walk.

The place feels genuinely quiet, which is either exactly what you want or not what you want at all. There's a reason it doesn't appear in every guidebook - it lacks the drama of coastal Norfolk or the spectacle of the Broads. But that's precisely its strength if you're staying at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park nearby and want somewhere to stretch your legs without driving across the county.

Go on a weekday morning if possible. Weekends bring enough casual visitors to spoil the solitude, and the woodland paths get a bit muddy after rain. It's free to access and there's no visitor centre, which means no overpriced tea but also no facilities. Come prepared.
