High Trees

The woodland around High Trees offers proper walking country just a few miles north of Salisbury. It's ancient forest in the best sense - proper old growth with enough space between the trees to actually see where you're going, which is more than can be said for some of the denser woods in the region.

You get a decent mix here. The paths are well-maintained and manageable for families with older kids, though pushing a buggy would be a nightmare on the muddier stretches. History types will appreciate that you're walking through landscape that's been wooded for centuries - this isn't some replanted plantation. The trees themselves aren't the main draw; the walk is. A couple of hours is the sweet spot before it starts feeling repetitive.

There's no entrance fee or visitor centre to speak of - you simply turn up and walk. Spring's particularly good when the bluebells come through, though honestly it's pleasant enough any time that isn't peak mud season. It pairs nicely with Brades Acre Camp Site just down the road if you're doing a proper Wiltshire break. The forest works as a morning walk before heading into Salisbury itself, or a leg-stretcher between other attractions.

Don't expect dramatic vistas or dramatic anything really. This is straightforward, uncomplicated woodland walking. If you want to clear your head for a couple of hours without faffing about with car parks or admission fees, High Trees does the job.
