High Wood

The woodland around High Wood near Skelmersdale is proper Lancashire countryside - dense mixed forest that feels more remote than you'd expect given how close it sits to town. You're walking through old trees, decent paths that wind between beech and oak, and if you go in autumn the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

It's not a managed attraction with visitor centres or marked trails, which means it's refreshingly straightforward. Bring decent boots because the ground can be boggy, especially after rain. Most people spend anywhere from an hour to a couple of hours here depending on how deep you fancy venturing. There's something satisfying about a walk where you're not following coloured arrows and paying entry fees.

Families with older kids will do well here - it's the kind of place where they can actually explore rather than shuffle along a rope barrier. Younger children might find it a bit samey after a while, all trees and moss. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and you'll see plenty of them working off energy on the quieter paths.

If you're staying at The Secret Garden Glamping just up the road, High Wood is an easy morning walk before settling back for afternoon fires and gin. It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but that's rather the point. You go here to actually walk through a forest, not to tick off a visit.
