Highcliffe Beach

The beach at Highcliffe stretches wide and golden, backed by dramatic red and orange cliffs that look like they've been sliced clean from the landscape. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard - you round a corner near Christchurch and suddenly there's proper colour in the geology, especially when the light hits right in late afternoon.

What you're actually doing here is walking, paddling, and taking photographs. The cliffs themselves are the main draw - they're genuinely striking, layered sandstone and gravel in shades that don't look particularly English. Families with young kids will have a decent couple of hours hunting for fossils (though you won't find many), paddling in the shallows, or just letting them run about on the sand. The beach is well-maintained and has that relaxed southern coast feel without the chaos of somewhere like Bournemouth, which is only a few miles away.

It's free to access and there's no real time pressure - you can knock out a quick 30-minute walk or spend half a day here if the weather holds. Come in low season and it's genuinely peaceful. Summer weekends get busier, naturally.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hoburne Park Holiday Park is barely a ten-minute walk away - Highcliffe Beach is the obvious go-to for a morning trip. It pairs well with exploring Christchurch's market and riverside, or heading into the New Forest proper, which sits just inland. Not flashy, but solid seaside.
