Highfield Plantation

The trees at Highfield Plantation stand proper tall, and on a decent day the walk through them feels like proper woodland - which is rarer than you'd think in Lincolnshire. It's a working forest rather than some manicured nature trail, so expect a mix of conifers and deciduous trees creating that lovely dappled light you're after.

You'll get a good forty-five minutes to an hour out of it if you take the main paths at an easy pace. Families with kids aged six and up will find it rewarding - there's enough space to let them burn off steam without worrying they'll get lost. Walkers benefit most, mind you. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe and think, especially early morning or midweek when it's quiet.

Market Rasen sits just a few miles away, which gives you a proper base for exploring the area. Couple this with nearby Station Farm Caravan and Camping Site - which has excellent reviews - and you've got a solid two or three-day itinerary. North Gulham Glamping is another good shout if you're after something less spartan. Both are within easy driving distance.

Bring decent boots if there's been rain; the woodland floor gets boggy in patches. No visitor facilities to speak of, so pack snacks and water. It's free to access, which is grand, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - just show up when it suits you. Not dramatic or showy, but if you want proper English woodland without the crowds, this delivers.
