Highlandman's Clump

A stand of Scots pine and Douglas fir rising sharply from the moorland south of Mintlaw - that's Highlandman's Clump. It's the sort of place that catches your eye on the map and makes you wonder if it's worth the detour. Spoiler: it is, though manage your expectations.

The clump itself is properly small. You're not talking about a rambling woodland afternoon here - more a focused 20-minute wander through decent conifers with decent views across Aberdeenshire farmland when the weather plays ball. The paths are well-maintained and the gradient's manageable, which means it works for families who don't fancy a full moorland hike.

Historically, these trees were planted as a marker or shelter belt, and there's something rather Scottish about the no-nonsense approach to forestry on display. Locals know it. Tourists often miss it entirely, which keeps it quiet on weekends.

The real draw is the walk from Mintlaw itself - the village has that proper rural feel, and combining this with Aden Caravan & Camping makes sense if you're basing yourself in the area. The campsite sits just over a mile away, so it's an easy leg-stretcher after setup.

Free to visit, naturally. Worth an hour of your time if you're staying nearby? Yes. A destination in itself? Probably not. But it's the sort of woodland pocket that rewards a local's curiosity rather than demanding tourist queues.
