Highmainshead Wood

A proper woodland walk through the Lowlands, Highmainshead Wood sits within easy reach of Lanark and makes for a solid afternoon escape if you're staying at one of the local parks like Ecosse Glamping. The forest itself is straightforward - mixed broadleaf and conifer stands with decent pathways that won't leave you scrambling through nettles, though conditions can get muddy depending on when you visit.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a dramatic landscape with dramatic views, but rather the sort of place where you can actually move at pace without constantly checking a map. Allow a couple of hours to work through the main trails without rushing. The woodland floor is fairly quiet, which families with younger kids might appreciate for a couple of hours, though there's nothing flashy here to hold attention for much longer than that.

Free access as far as I can tell, and there's no particular season that stands out as essential - spring brings the birds in properly, autumn looks decent, and winter isn't hellish when other Scottish woods become sludge traps.
