Hill Bank Wood

The woodland around Consett isn't famous, and that's rather the point. Hill Bank Wood is the kind of place locals know about and outsiders stumble upon by accident, which makes it genuinely worth seeking out. You're walking through proper mixed woodland here - broadleaves mostly, with the sort of dappled light that makes even a grey Durham afternoon feel contemplative. The paths are straightforward enough, muddy in winter, and they wind through enough acreage to keep you occupied for a good two hours if you're not rushing.

It's the kind of spot that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off. Walkers will appreciate the network of trails, and it's genuinely peaceful without feeling isolated. There's nothing museum-like or manicured about it. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will do well here; younger ones might get restless unless there's a creek to paddle in, depending on recent rain.

The nearest facilities are back in Consett itself, so don't expect a visitor centre or café. Admission appears to be free, which is always a bonus. Spring's the obvious choice if you want the woodland floor covered in bluebells, but frankly it's worth visiting any season - autumn colours are decent too. If you're staying at Village Green Holiday Park just six miles away, this makes for a solid half-day excursion without the crowds you'd hit at somewhere more polished. Real woodland, real quiet.
