Hill Fort

Grassy earthworks rise from Northamptonshire's rolling countryside, marking where Iron Age communities once built their defensive stronghold. This hill fort - one of several dotted across the county - offers little in the way of visible ruins but plenty for those who enjoy piecing together ancient puzzles from subtle landscape clues.

Walking the perimeter, you can still make out the raised banks and ditches that once protected the settlement. It's not immediately obvious what you're looking at, mind you. History buffs will appreciate the chance to study these Romano-British remains in peace, though families with restless children might find the experience a bit abstract.

The views across the Northampton countryside are lovely enough, and it's a proper walk to reach the summit. Allow an hour or so to explore the earthworks properly and soak up the atmosphere. Free to visit, naturally - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of.

If you're staying at Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park or one of the other sites around Northampton, this makes for a decent morning's diversion, particularly for amateur archaeologists. The fort works well combined with other historical sites in the area, though don't expect dramatic castle walls or interactive displays. Sometimes the most rewarding discoveries are the ones that make you work a bit harder.
