Hill Hole Nature Reserve

A glacial depression filled with water and surrounded by woodland - that's Hill Hole in a nutshell, and it's genuinely worth a visit if you're based at one of the caravan parks around Leicester. The reserve sits just outside the city, accessible enough for a morning's walk but far enough away to feel properly removed from the urban sprawl.

What you get here is a modest but interesting geological feature. The water's dark and still, reflecting the trees that crowd the banks. It's the sort of place where you notice things - damselflies, the way the light filters through the canopy, occasional wildfowl if you're quiet about it. The walk itself isn't demanding, which makes it ideal for families staying at Charnwood Acres or, if you've pushed the boat out, The Dandelion Hideaway.

Historywise, there's a proper story here. This isn't just a random pond - it's evidence of glacial activity, a chunk of the last ice age left behind in the Midlands. That alone gives the place an edge over your standard nature reserve.

The main draw is the walking. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're meandering and actually looking at things, rather than charging through. It works brilliantly as a short excursion before or after a visit to Bradgate Park, which sits only a few miles away and offers considerably more in terms of landscape and facilities. Hill Hole is quieter, though - fewer people, fewer facilities, more feeling of discovery. Go when it's not been raining heavily, or the paths get properly muddy.
