Hill of Firfolds

The walk up Hill of Firfolds won't take long - it's a straightforward ascent that rewards you with proper views across Aberdeenshire and down towards the coast near Banff. The hill itself is modest in height but steep enough to feel like you've earned the panorama once you reach the top. On a clear day you can see right across the Moray Firth, and on grey days the mist rolling in from the sea has its own appeal.

This is one for walkers rather than sightseers - there's no café at the summit, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape. Most folk would allow an hour there and back, though you could stretch it to ninety minutes if you fancy a proper sit-down at the top with a flask. The terrain is manageable but can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

It works well as part of a broader ramble around the Banff area. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Banff Links is closest at just over three miles away - you could combine this with a walk down to the coast or a poke around the town itself. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog for what's essentially a hill with a view.

Free to visit, obviously. No official opening hours because there aren't any gates. Go when the weather looks half-decent.
