Hillsborough Recreation Grounds

The grounds rise steeply from the edge of Ilfracombe, a proper tangle of woodland and open grassland that feels like you've stumbled into someone's overgrown garden - in the best way. It's a nature reserve, so expect paths winding through scrubby trees, patches of gorse, and if you time it right, bluebells that make the whole place look like it's been airbrushed. The views back towards Ilfracombe and the coast are genuinely worth the huffing climb up.

This works best for walkers and anyone after a quick green space fix without the crowds of a major attraction. Kids will get a decent half-hour out of it - there's space to run about and things to poke at in the undergrowth - though it's not a full afternoon's activity. The paths can be muddy and a touch steep in places, so decent boots aren't optional.

It's free to wander, which helps, and there's no obvious entrance fee or gates that would stop you. Allow an hour if you're doing the full circuit, less if you just want a quick walk and view.

Given how close it is to Hele Valley Holiday Park and the other camping spots dotted around Ilfracombe, it's ideal as a leg-stretcher during a seaside park holiday. Combine it with a beach visit and you've got a proper day sorted - you get your nature hit without having to travel far. It's not going to change your life, but on a decent day it's well worth the detour if you're staying locally.
