The woodland around Hillside Scouts Birchwood sits just outside Laurencekirk in Aberdeenshire, a proper sprawl of mature trees and forest paths that's ideal if you want to stretch your legs without needing a full hiking day. It's Scout-owned land, but the forest itself is accessible for walking, and you get the sense this place hasn't been over-manicured for visitors - which is honestly refreshing. The canopy is thick enough that even on drizzly Highland days it feels sheltered, and the paths wind through enough variety that a couple of hours disappears quickly.

Families with younger kids will manage fine here - nothing technical, just straightforward forest walking. Teenagers might find it a bit low-key unless they're genuinely after peace and quiet. Real walkers won't be blown away by the terrain, but it's a solid spot if you're based nearby and need a woodland break.

I'd allow two hours comfortably if you're not rushing. There's no visitor infrastructure that I could spot, so come prepared for bog-standard forest conditions - muddy after rain, midges in summer, proper darkness by 4pm in winter. Free to access, as far as I could tell.
