Hobbs Hole Wood

A proper woodland walk south of Gloucester, Hobbs Hole Wood gives you the kind of forest you actually want to spend time in - thick with old oaks and beech, quiet enough to hear yourself think. The canopy closes in properly overhead, making it feel properly cut off from the world even though you're just minutes from the city edge.

It's a walker's spot more than anything else. You're not getting dramatic viewpoints or marked trails with interpretation boards here. What you get is shade, decent woodland paths, and the chance to burn off some energy without the crowds. Families with primary-age kids will manage it fine; teenagers might find it a touch dull unless they're into spotting birds or collecting fungi. The undergrowth shifts seasonally, so spring brings bluebells and late summer's heavy with mushrooms if you know what to look for.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water if it's warm. Free access as far as I can tell, though the exact boundaries aren't obviously marked. Give yourself a couple of hours maximum - it's not vast, and you'll cover the main paths in that time. Winter's actually lovely here when the trees are bare and you can see further through.

If you're staying at Pepper Pot Caravan Park nearby, it's a natural half-day add-on to break up a Gloucestershire holiday. Don't expect anything fancy. Just decent woodland and a proper break from whatever's going on elsewhere.
