Hockley Woods

The woods sprawl across 86 hectares just outside Benfleet, offering proper woodland walking without the twee crowds of more famous forest spots. Ancient oaks and birches dominate the canopy, with a network of paths ranging from gentle loops to proper treks through bracken and bramble. You'll find ponds scattered throughout, which attract a decent variety of birds and wildlife if you're patient enough to stop and listen.

Most folk spend two to three hours here, though you could easily knock out a solid walk in 90 minutes if you stick to the main trails. The ground can get muddy after rain, which makes it more interesting than bone-dry forest tracks but less forgiving if you're wearing decent shoes. Families with younger children will manage the flatter sections fine, though older kids who can handle a bit of scrambly terrain will enjoy it more.

This works brilliantly as a mid-morning escape if you're based at Essex Glamping just down the road, or as a stretching-the-legs option between exploring the wider South Essex area. The woods feel properly remote despite being barely three miles from suburbia. There's something refreshing about that contrast - dense enough that you feel genuinely away from things, but accessible enough that you're not battling through impenetrable forest. Entry is free, and there's space for a handful of cars near the main entrances. Early mornings are best if you want any peace.
