Hodbarrow Point Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Hodbarrow Point stands on a shale spit jutting into the Irish Sea, and it's the sort of place where you can actually feel the tidal shift beneath your feet. Built in 1905, it's a functional red-and-white striped tower that's less about grand Victorian romance and more about proper coastal engineering - the kind of structure that's kept ships safe through genuine Cumbrian gales.

You get here from Millom, walking out along the point itself, which is genuinely wild in bad weather and rather meditative when it's calm. The lighthouse isn't open to the public inside, but the walk to reach it is what matters. You'll pass shale beds and tide pools, and on clear days the view across to the Lake District hills is proper good. Allow 45 minutes to an hour round trip depending on tides and how long you dawdle.

It's more for the walkers and photography types than anyone expecting a visitor centre or facilities. Kids might enjoy the rock pools if you time it right around low tide, but there's not much to do once you've seen the tower itself - so don't plan to spend the afternoon. That said, it's a cracking spot if you're staying at Harbour Lights Campsite just down the coast, which is barely half a mile away. Combine it with a poke around Millom's industrial heritage and you've got a proper coastal morning sorted. The shale platform can be slippery when wet, so decent shoes are essential.
