Hogshaw wildlife Park

The approach to Hogshaw is deceptive - you're driving through proper Buckinghamshire countryside, all rolling fields and stone walls, when suddenly there's this modest wildlife park tucked away near Buckingham. It's one of those places that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is half the charm.

You're looking at a small operation focused on native British wildlife and some exotic animals. The layout encourages you to wander at your own pace rather than follow a rigid route. Families with younger children will manage the whole thing in a couple of hours without feeling rushed; older kids might spend longer if they're genuinely into animals. Walking boots are sensible - the ground can be muddy depending on the weather.

It's the sort of place that works well as a half-day activity alongside a longer park holiday. If you're staying at Embers Camping over in Claydon, less than three miles away, Hogshaw makes an easy morning visit before lunch. The low-key approach appeals to families who find the big chain attractions exhausting.

The animals are fairly well kept from what I saw, and there's something refreshing about a park that doesn't try to be Colchester Zoo. That said, it's genuinely worth checking opening hours and admission prices before you head out - these smaller operations can have irregular schedules.
