The Holburne sits in Bath like a well-kept secret, housed in a grand neoclassical villa that's as much of a draw as what's inside. You walk into rooms lined with paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts collected by a 19th-century businessman with serious taste. The collection spans Old Masters through to contemporary work, but it's the sense of intimacy that makes it special - this isn't a sprawling institution where you get lost after an hour.

It's particularly good if you're into visual art without needing the cathedral-scale experience of somewhere like the V&A. History types will appreciate the period furnishings and silverware collections, though kids under ten might struggle unless they're already gallery-savvy. Most people spend between 90 minutes and two hours here, depending on how closely you read the labels.

Free entry is a genuine bonus. The location is ideal if you're staying at Widbrook Barns - a short drive into Bath proper puts you at the museum, leaving your afternoon free to explore the Georgian terraces and Roman Baths without feeling rushed. The surrounding area has decent cafes and the whole neighbourhood repays a proper wander.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends pull crowds from Bath town centre, and the galleries feel cramped.
