Walking into Hollytrees Museum in Colchester, you're stepping into a proper Georgian townhouse stuffed with the sort of objects people actually lived with. It's the town's social history museum - think domestic life rather than dusty glass cases of artefacts nobody understands. Rooms are dressed as they would have been, with furniture, clothing, and everyday bits that show how Colchester folk got on from the 18th century onwards.

The house itself is the draw. Built in 1718, it's got good bones and the kind of period rooms that work because they feel lived-in, not staged. Families with younger children get a decent hour out of it - there's enough to explore without the tedious trudge through endless galleries. Older kids interested in costume or how people actually lived will find it absorbs them properly.

It's free entry, which is the main reason to bother if you're camped nearby at Swallows Field or Colchester Country Park - both within easy reach for a rainy-day activity. Rushbanks Farm is a touch further out but still reasonable. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're reading the room notes. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends get a bit cramped for a place this intimate.

Honestly? It's not going to be the highlight of your trip to Essex. But combined with Colchester's other bits - the castle museum and town itself - it works as part of a half-day plan. Worth the short stop if you're already in town, less worth planning a special journey from your caravan site.
