Holt Down

The walk up Holt Down rewards you with one of Hampshire's best viewpoints, and you'll understand why locals make this a regular pilgrimage. It's a proper ridge walk rather than a peak in the dramatic sense - the summit sits at 260 metres and the views stretch across the South Downs towards the Weald. On a clear day you're looking at miles of rolling green, punctuated by church spires and distant wooded valleys.

The ascent from Petersfield takes about ninety minutes if you're walking at a steady pace. It's not particularly taxing - you're gaining height gradually rather than battling steep scrambles - but the final stretch up the open downland gets you breathing properly. The path is well-marked and popular enough that you won't get lost, though it can be muddy after rain.

Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger children might struggle with the distance.
