Holy Pool of St Fillan

The pool itself is modest - a shallow, peaty basin where St Fillan allegedly bathed in the 8th century, tucked into the landscape near Crianlarich like something you'd stumble upon rather than plan a pilgrimage to. Walk the short path through bracken and you're there: dark water, moss-covered stones, the kind of place that feels genuinely old without any of the tourist infrastructure that usually comes with it.

It's worth visiting if you're already in the area hiking around Tyndrum or staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park, but don't expect grand monuments or crowds. What you get is atmosphere - the sort of spiritual weight that comes from centuries of people believing something mattered here. History types and walkers will appreciate it far more than families with restless children; there's nothing to do except think and photograph.

Free to visit, though the path can be boggy. Allow half an hour maximum, longer only if you're into lingering at places with quiet reputations. The real appeal is the walk itself through proper Scottish countryside - rolling hills, proper views back toward the Lowlands. Combine it with a larger park visit nearby or a Tyndrum base, treating it as a short excursion rather than a destination. Spring or early autumn are best; midwinter and you'll be squelching through mud wondering why you bothered. It's the kind of place that rewards low expectations and rewards them genuinely.
