Holy Trinity Weymouth with St Nicholas

The twin churches of Holy Trinity and St Nicholas sit right at the water's edge in Weymouth, which is rather brilliant if you think about it - you're genuinely feet away from the harbour. Holy Trinity itself is the larger of the two, a proper medieval affair with stonework that tells you it's been there for centuries, while St Nicholas is the smaller companion, both squeezed into this tight corner where the town meets the sea.

You can wander in free, and most people allow twenty minutes to half an hour, though architecture enthusiasts might linger longer picking out the period details. The real draw is the location rather than jaw-dropping interiors - standing outside after a look round, you get that excellent view across Weymouth harbour with the boats bobbing about. It's the kind of spot that makes sense only once you're there; photographs don't really capture why it matters.

History buffs will appreciate the medieval bones, though families with restless kids might find thirty minutes enough. The waterfront setting makes it an easy call when you're exploring Weymouth's seafront anyway - not a diversion, just something that's there. If you're staying at Chesil Beach Holiday Park or one of the other nearby caravan sites, it's a pleasant stroll into town rather than a proper destination in itself. Rodwell's just inland, so parking shouldn't be a nightmare, though Weymouth gets rammed in summer. Go on a quieter day if you want to appreciate the peace of the place.
