Holyhead Allotments

The allotments on the edge of Holyhead are one of those spots that wouldn't make anyone's bucket list, but they're genuinely worth an hour if you're already in the area. It's a working nature reserve where local gardeners tend their plots alongside proper wildlife habitat - nothing manicured or touristy about it. You'll see lapwings, curlews if you're lucky, and the scrubland does attract all sorts of migrating birds, particularly in spring and autumn.

It's frankly brilliant for birdwatchers and anyone keen on spotting something unexpected during a caravan holiday. The walking is gentle and undemanding, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation boards. What you get is authentic: locals tending vegetables, birds going about their business, and space that feels quietly productive rather than designed for tourism.

You're basically free to wander the paths, and it costs nothing. Allow 45 minutes to an hour unless you're serious about your binoculars. Spring migration season (March to May) is when it really comes alive - you might catch warblers and rarities passing through. Summer's quieter but the breeding birds are around.

Stay at Anglesey Outdoors or Coastal Pods, both within two miles, and this makes a nice early-morning wander before heading out proper for the day. It's the sort of place that rewards getting up early and keeping eyes open. Not Instagram-worthy, but proper Wales.
