Home Covert

Home Covert is a proper woodland walk just east of York, the kind of place where you can disappear into the trees for an hour or two without feeling like you've driven halfway across the country. It's not a grand estate or a curated nature reserve - this is genuine working forest with paths that wind through decent-sized timber and plenty of space to stretch your legs without bumping into crowds.

The woodland itself is mixed, with good native species coverage and enough variation to keep things interesting as you walk. You'll find proper trails rather than manicured paths, which means it's genuinely pleasant for families with older kids who don't need everything hand-holding obvious, but younger children might find it a bit muddy and less obviously rewarding than, say, a visitor centre with interpretive boards. Walkers will get the most from this - it's a solid local spot for stretching the legs, and the trees do their job of making you forget you're only a short drive from the city.

Being free and accessible from the nearby car park makes it an easy add-on to a holiday at Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm or Acorn Glade Glamping York, both within a few miles. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. Aim for autumn or early spring when the footfall is lighter and the light filters through the canopy properly. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing, though you can do a quick circuit in forty minutes.
