Homington Down

The walk up Homington Down takes you straight out of Salisbury's medieval sprawl and onto proper chalk downland within twenty minutes. It's not dramatic - no dramatic views, no sudden vista that'll make you gasp. But that's rather the point. The summit itself is unremarkable, just a gentle rise where the path levels out and the landscape opens up around you in gentle folds of green.

What makes it worth the leg work is the walk itself. The path climbs steadily through open grassland with nothing between you and the sky, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the Wiltshire countryside. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward route and the sense of actual walking rather than just wandering. Families with primary-age kids can manage it easily enough in an hour or so, though younger children might find it a bit tedious - it's just grass and views, no rocks to scramble over or streams to paddle in.

This is genuinely free and accessible any time. Allow an hour to ninety minutes round trip depending on your pace. It works perfectly as a morning sortie if you're based at Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm or Coombe Caravan Park - both are less than two miles away - before heading back into town for lunch or combining it with a visit to the cathedral and Old Sarum.
