Hookham Copse

Walk into Hookham Copse and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind where the canopy closes in and you actually feel like you've left Hampshire's rolling countryside behind. It's a small forest that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is precisely why it works. The paths wind through beech and oak with enough shade to feel genuinely cool even on warmer days, and the ground's soft enough underfoot that you don't feel like you're marching.

This is walkers' territory, really. History buffs might find something in the woods themselves, but you're not coming here for ruins or displays - you're coming for the walk. On a quiet weekday morning it feels genuinely peaceful, though weekends can bring families with dogs who've had the same idea. Allow two hours for a decent loop if you're not rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you know where you're going.

Alresford sits just down the road, which helps. The three caravan parks nearby - The Spinney (closest at 1.3 miles), Hampshire Hills up the way at 3.1 miles, and Woodlands alongside it - all give you decent bases for exploring the area. Hookham Copse isn't a day-out destination on its own; it's the sort of place you'd fit in between a proper walk elsewhere or a visit to town. Nothing fancy, nothing touristy. Just a wood that does exactly what it says on the tin.
