Hopetoun House

You'll spot the ochre and cream facade of Hopetoun House long before you reach it - a proper 17th-century stately home that commands the landscape just outside Newbridge in Fife. The main draw is wandering the state rooms on a guided tour, seeing how the landed gentry actually lived, complete with period furnishings and paintings that wouldn't look out of place in a major gallery. The grounds are genuinely worth the walk, stretching down to the Firth of Forth with views that justify the detour.

History enthusiasts will spend a good two hours here without feeling rushed. The gardens are laid out with actual purpose - not ornamental fluff - and kids aged ten upwards tend to find the scale of the place impressive rather than boring. Younger children might struggle with the "don't touch" atmosphere indoors, though the outdoor bits keep them occupied.
