Hornecourt Wood

The woodland around Hornecourt, just outside Lingfield, offers proper Surrey walking territory - the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours without feeling like you've driven halfway across the country. It's mixed deciduous forest, nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant underfoot with enough paths winding through to keep you from treading the same route twice.

What you're really doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, just trees and trails. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so unless they're the type to spot woodland creatures and collect interesting leaves. Serious walkers and those after a bit of peace will get far more from it. The paths are manageable year-round, though winter can be muddy.

Being free and open access, you can turn up whenever suits. There's no entrance gate or admission to fret about - just park sensibly nearby and get going. Allow an hour minimum if you're just after a leg-stretch, a couple of hours if you want to properly explore without rushing.

It works well as part of a wider Lingfield weekend. Long Acres Caravan & Camping Park sits just 2.8 miles away, making it an easy morning stroll from your pitch. The glamping option there (4.4 rating) gives you a bit more comfort if you're not full-on camping people. Combine it with exploring Lingfield itself and you've got a solid Surrey break - nothing flashy, but honest woodland walking on your doorstep.
