Horse Close Copse

A proper woodland walk just outside Bridport, Horse Close Copse is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a small mixed forest - nothing vast, nothing dramatic - but if you're camping nearby at Dorset Valley Glamping or Hidden Valley Dorset and fancy an hour away from the tent, it does the job well.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous and conifer, with paths winding through relatively undisturbed forest. You get dappled light, the smell of leaf litter, birdsong. It's genuinely quiet in a way that surprises you so close to a market town. The paths are manageable rather than challenging - fine for families with kids who can manage a decent walk, but nothing that'll test serious hikers.

Walkers will appreciate it most; it's the kind of place you go for the walk itself rather than a destination view or historical feature. There's no visitor centre, no facilities that we can find information on, and no obvious entry point or charges - which is either refreshing or frustrating depending on what you want. Bring a decent map or your phone's GPS, because signage is minimal.

Timing-wise, you're looking at 45 minutes to an hour depending on which paths you take. Early morning in autumn when the light's good is when it really sings. It slots neatly into a Dorset coast holiday where you're already bouncing between Bridport and West Bay - worth the detour if you need a forest fix, but don't rearrange your itinerary specifically for it.
