Horse Isles

Low tide at Horse Isles reveals a proper little wonderland - a scatter of rocky outcrops and sand flats just offshore near Dalbeattie that transforms depending on what the sea decides to do. It's the kind of place where the geography actually matters; come at the right time and you can walk out to these small islands, though you'll want to check tide times before you head down or you'll be paddling back.

The beach itself is quiet and relatively unspoilt, which is refreshing given how rammed some Scottish coastal spots get. Kids will enjoy clambering over the rocks if they're the adventurous sort, and it's good for spotting shells and the occasional starfish in the pools. The views back towards the Solway Firth are decent enough without being spectacular.

It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend all day here unless you're genuinely keen on rock pools. But if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Castle Point or Sandyhills Bay, it's definitely worth a morning visit to burn off some energy. The walk from Dalbeattie takes about fifteen minutes, which makes it accessible for families without requiring much planning.

Go early if possible. Mid-morning on a weekday means you'll have the place largely to yourself, and the light's better for photography. Bring proper shoes - the rocks are slippery when wet, and there's nothing worse than a twisted ankle miles from the car park.
