Hothfield Heathlands is a proper slice of Kent's shrinking lowland heath - the sort of landscape that's vanished from most of the south-east, which makes walking these trails feel like stepping back in time. You'll find yourself on well-maintained paths cutting through gorse and heather, with open views that surprise you given how built-up Kent generally feels.

It's free to visit and there's no faffing about with opening times - the reserve is essentially accessible whenever you fancy it. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander; the trails aren't long but they're worth savouring rather than rushing. Birdwatchers and botanists will get proper value here - nightjars breed on site in summer, and the mix of plants supports insects you won't see on mowed grassland.

Families with young kids might find an hour sufficient before the novelty of heathland wears thin, but walkers after something low-stress with genuine ecological interest will be pleased. The reserve works brilliantly alongside a stay at nearby Dunn Street Farm Campsite or the higher-end glamping at Longberry Farm - both close enough for an easy morning or afternoon visit without commitment. If the weather's poor, the exposed terrain gets bleak fast, so pick a clear day. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's authentic and increasingly rare.
