Hoton Spinney

Twenty minutes from Barrow upon Soar, Hoton Spinney is a small woodland that punches above its weight if you're after a proper walk without the crowds. The trees are mature and dense enough to feel like you've actually escaped, even though you're barely outside town. Paths wind through with decent enough footing, though it can get muddy after rain - standard woodland stuff.

It's ideal for families wanting a gentle hour or so among the trees. Kids will find plenty to explore without it becoming a slog, and the compact size means you won't lose anyone for too long. Dog walkers clearly use it regularly, which tells you it's accessible and straightforward. If you're based at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping nearby, this is exactly the sort of low-key spot you'd combine with a longer country walk elsewhere.

Historically it's a remnant of the old Leicestershire woodlands, which appeals to anyone interested in how the landscape has changed. That said, don't expect interpretation boards or anything formal - you're just getting the woods as they are. The real value is in the peace of it. Spring's probably best when the undergrowth bursts through and you get proper light filtering down. Winter's fine too if you don't mind the bare branches.

Free access, clearly, and you can do it in whatever time suits you. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the short drive from either caravan park if the weather's decent and you fancy twenty minutes among the trees.
