The moment you walk in, you're surrounded by marbles - thousands of them, filling shelves and displays in a way that feels less museum and more like stepping into someone's obsessive collection. House of Marbles in Newton Abbot is exactly that: a working factory and retail space where they've been producing hand-made marbles since the 1970s, and they've kept everything on display to show you how it's done.

You can watch the glassmakers at work if you time it right, which is genuinely hypnotic - seeing molten glass spun into perfect spheres. The museum part documents marble history going back centuries, with examples from different eras and cultures. It's small enough that you won't need more than an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to read every label and browse the gift shop.

Families with younger kids will find it engaging, especially those who've still got marbles on the brain. It's less thrilling if you're past ten or so, unless you genuinely enjoy manufacturing processes. Adults interested in craft production or glass-making get more from it than casual visitors.

The location works well for a caravan holiday in the area - it's close to both Oakmoor Touring Park and Dornafield, so an easy half-day slot between exploring Dartmoor proper.
