Howe Wood

Walking into Howe Wood feels like stepping back about two hundred years. This Essex forest sits east of Saffron Walden and delivers proper woodland without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. Ancient oaks and native trees create a canopy that actually changes how the light falls - it's worth noticing that rather than just trudging through.

It's a straightforward woodland walk, nothing dramatic. You get peace, birdsong, and the kind of ground cover that tells you this place has been left alone to do its thing. Local walkers and families with kids who enjoy exploring will get the most from it. The forest isn't a destination in itself - it's more something you'd do as a half-day outing while staying in the area.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities we could pin down, and no admission charge as far as we can tell. Allow a couple of hours to wander properly rather than rushing through. Spring and autumn are the obvious choices, when the woodland actually looks like something special.

It works well as a counterpoint to a park holiday - somewhere to get outside and actually feel quiet. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
