Huckley Hill

The walk up Huckley Hill rewards you with proper views across Wensleydale - that's the real draw here, not the summit itself which is modest by Pennine standards. From Leyburn, it's an easy afternoon's graft that won't knacker you out, and on a clear day you can pick out the valley floor stretching toward Hawes with reasonable clarity.

It's the kind of walk that works well for families with older kids or anyone who wants fresh air without needing full hiking boots. The climb itself isn't steep, which means children around eight and up will manage fine. Don't expect a trig point or any grand monument - you're really here for the vistas and the peace of it all. An hour up, an hour down, with time to sit about and eat a sandwich. Perfectly adequate for a morning activity when you're based at one of the nearby parks.

Stablefell Holidays sits just 3 miles away and makes a logical base - you could easily knock this out before lunch and still have the afternoon free for something else in Wensleydale. Cherish Glamping and Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club are slightly further afield but still within striking distance if you want something with a bit more space or facilities. The hill doesn't demand much planning. No entrance fee that we know of, no annoying opening hours to check. Just turn up and walk. Worth doing once if you're in the area, though it won't haunt you if you skip it.
