Hundon Manor

The earthworks at Hundon Manor near Market Rasen are genuinely subtle - you won't find dramatic castle ruins here. What you're looking at are the levelled remains of a medieval manor house, visible as low banks and ditches in the landscape if you know what to look for. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of detective work rather than instant gratification.

This is proper archaeologist territory. The site tells you something real about how people lived in medieval Lincolnshire - not the grand estates of the nobility, but the working homes of the gentry. You'll spend maybe twenty to thirty minutes poking about unless you're genuinely into earthwork interpretation, in which case you could happily spend longer plotting where buildings once stood.

Historically minded walkers get the most from this. If your kids expect something you can climb on or explore inside, they'll find it dull within minutes. Fair warning: there's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever - it's open access land, free, and you'll need to be comfortable with basic map reading or a decent OS app to locate the actual earthworks.

Stays at Wolds View Country Park, just down the road, make it an easy add-on to a broader walking holiday in the Lincolnshire Wolds. Station Farm, a couple of miles away, offers a proper campsite base if you're doing the area properly. The manor works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a standalone destination - combine it with the wider landscape and you've got something worth the drive.
