Hungate Church

The medieval ruins of Hungate Church sit quietly on the outskirts of Beccles, Norfolk - a fragment of something that mattered deeply once, now reduced to flint walls and the memory of worship. There isn't much left, if I'm honest. The tower and nave walls stand, but the roof's long gone, and you're walking through grass where pews used to be. It's the kind of place that rewards a quick detour rather than a dedicated pilgrimage.

What you're looking at is proper Norfolk architecture - flint and stone typical of the region, dating back centuries. The emptiness of it is rather affecting, actually. You can see where the chancel was, trace the layout of the building in your head. It's free to visit, and you can wander round without restriction. Allow yourself twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to sit and think about things.

Historywalkers will find it worthwhile. Families with young children might get bored quickly - there's no interpretation board, no gift shop, just the bones of a church. That said, if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Dawn Chorus Holidays or Hidden Meadows are both within easy reach - it makes a decent leg-stretcher between sites. The walk itself is pleasant enough, and Beccles itself has proper amenities if you need to grab a coffee afterwards.

Go early or late to avoid crowds, though crowds here are hardly the problem. It's the kind of ruin that gets better the fewer people are about.
