Hunter Banks Wood

A woodland walk near Northallerton that actually rewards the effort, Hunter Banks Wood feels properly remote despite being barely twenty minutes from town. The forest floor is thick with bracken and moss, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit around. You get good canopy coverage here - proper sheltered on rainy days, which in Yorkshire means most days.

The paths are reasonably well-maintained but steep in places, so it's not a stroll for toddlers or anyone after an easy amble. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit. Walkers and families with older kids will get the most from it; the woodland is dark and atmospheric rather than dramatic, but there's something satisfying about it - ancient-feeling without the crowds you'd find at the honey-pot spots.

Free to access and no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Best visited after heavy rain when the streams are running and the place has real life to it. In August it can feel a bit dry and dull. If you're staying at Whorlton Pods nearby, it's an easy drive to slip away for a proper woodland stomp without travelling far. Not Instagram-famous, which is exactly why you should come.
