Hunt's Plantation

Hunt's Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Alton, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's genuine forest - not a manicured country estate, but actual trees and undergrowth that feels like you've slipped away from Hampshire's rolling farmland into something wilder.

The paths wind through decent-sized stands of conifers and broadleaf woodland. You won't find dramatic vistas or a visitor centre with a gift shop - it's straightforward walking territory. On a clear day it's pleasant enough; in autumn when the light filters through orange and brown canopy, it's genuinely worth an afternoon. Most people would need two hours to get a proper sense of it without rushing.

It suits walkers far more than sightseers. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after the first forty minutes unless they're proper nature types. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and access appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally in Alton first if you want confirmation on parking or any restrictions.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Feather Down Manor Farm or Hampshire Hills are both within easy reach - this makes a solid morning or afternoon out without needing to drive far. It's the sort of walk you do between other things rather than as a destination in itself. Combine it with a walk around Alton itself or one of the other woodland spots in the area for a fuller day.
