Huntspill River

Calling this a lake is generous - the Huntspill River is more accurately a tidal channel that snakes through Somerset's flat coastal landscape between East Huntspill and the sea. But that doesn't make it any less interesting for those who appreciate wetland wildlife and quiet waterside walks.

Birds are the main draw here. Herons stand motionless in the shallows while egrets pick their way through the reeds. During winter months, you might spot curlews and various duck species. The raised banks provide decent walking, though it's proper flat terrain - no hills to speak of.

Families with young children will find it peaceful but possibly a bit too quiet. There's no playground or facilities, just the river and surrounding farmland. Keen photographers and wildlife enthusiasts will get more from a visit, especially early morning when the light catches the water.

Access is free and the area is always open, though parking can be limited near the better viewing spots. An hour is probably enough unless you're settling in for serious birdwatching.

Staying at Burnham Holiday Village or Haven Burnham-on-Sea puts you within easy reach - both are less than three miles away. The Huntspill makes for a gentle contrast to busier coastal attractions, though it won't keep restless teenagers occupied for long.
