Iden Auxiliary Units Observational Base

During the Second World War, while German invasion seemed imminent, the British military established a network of secret observation posts across the countryside. The Iden Auxiliary Units site, just outside Winchelsea in Sussex, is one of the few surviving examples - a physical reminder of how seriously Britain took the threat of Nazi occupation.

What you're actually looking at is a concrete bunker, camouflaged and positioned to watch the Romney Marsh and surrounding approaches. It's small, yes. You won't spend hours here. But if you're interested in wartime history or military engineering, it's genuinely compelling - the kind of place that makes you think about what life was actually like in 1940.

The site demands a bit of detective work to access it properly. Your best bet is contacting Winchelsea locally or checking with the nearby holiday parks - Winchelsea Sands, Rye Harbour, or Wheatfields Glamping - as they often have visitor information. Bring good shoes; it's not a manicured tourist spot. Families with older kids interested in history will get more from it than young children. Plan 30-45 minutes maximum, longer if you're photographing or sketching.

It works well as part of a broader Sussex coast exploration - combine it with walks around Winchelsea itself or head to Camber Sands if you're based at the Parkdean resort further south. Worth a detour if you're already in the area, less worth a special trip alone.
