IFS Cloud Royal Docks

The IFS Cloud building dominates the Royal Docks skyline like nothing else in this part of East London. It's a proper striking piece of architecture - all curves and glass, designed by Herzog & de Meuron - and it's become the area's defining landmark since completion in 2020.

You can't actually go inside unless you work there or have business at the offices, but that's not really the point. The building is best appreciated from the water or from the surrounding docks themselves. Walk along the waterfront and you'll see why it's generated such strong reactions. Some reckon it's brilliant; others think it's a bit much for what is essentially a commercial office block. Either way, it's undeniably impressive as a piece of contemporary design.

The Royal Docks itself has had a proper renaissance in recent years. There's walking and cycling routes aplenty, riverside cafes, and a genuine sense that this corner of London is going somewhere. If you're staying at Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping - about five miles away - the docks make for a solid morning or afternoon venture. You could easily spend a couple of hours wandering about, grabbing coffee, and getting some decent photos of the building from various angles.

Best visited on a clear day when the glass and reflections really sing. Winter light hits it differently than summer. Go without expecting to step inside, and you won't be disappointed.
