Inside, the Imperial War Museum pulls no punches about what conflict actually looks like, which means it's not for the squeamish but absolutely gripping if you can handle it.

You're walking through four floors of weaponry, vehicles, and personal accounts that range from World War One trench conditions (recreated with uncomfortable accuracy) to the Falkland Islands campaign. The Holocaust exhibition is particularly harrowing and genuinely important - not an easy walk-through, but necessary. Kids aged ten and up tend to engage properly rather than just trudging through; younger children might find it overwhelming.

Allow three to four hours if you're doing it justice. The admission is free, which is remarkable given the scale and quality of the collections. The building itself, a former Royal Bethlem Hospital, has character - all soaring ceilings and unexpected corners.
