In with the Lemurs- Whipsnade Zoo

The lemur enclosure at Whipsnade Zoo is where you'll find yourself face-to-face with these impossibly agile primates, leaping through trees with their distinctive black-and-white tails held high like flags. It's part of the larger open-air zoo near Dunstable, and this particular experience lets you get genuinely close to the animals as they move overhead and around you.

What makes it worthwhile is that lemurs are genuinely entertaining to watch - they're curious, vocal, and constantly active. Kids under eight tend to be mesmerized; teenagers might spend twenty minutes here and move on. The enclosure itself is well-designed, giving the lemurs proper space while still allowing decent viewing from multiple angles.

You'll need a full day ticket to Whipsnade Zoo to access this, which isn't cheap, but if you're already doing the zoo circuit, the lemur walk-through is one of the better exhibits. Allow about thirty to forty-five minutes here depending on how the animals are behaving on the day - sometimes they're all at the far end, sometimes they're right above your head. Early morning visits tend to be when they're most active.

It slots well into a wider Chiltern Hills trip. Merlin Farm Camping is practically on the doorstep at 1.3 miles, making it ideal if you're basing yourself locally. You could combine this with walks around the surrounding countryside - the Chilterns offer proper hiking if lemurs are just your appetizer. Worth doing if you're already committed to the zoo; less essential if you're just passing through Dunstable.
