Inglewhite Cross

A stone cross standing alone in the Lancashire countryside, just a couple of miles from Preston - that's Inglewhite Cross. It's one of those roadside monuments you could easily drive past without noticing, which is precisely why stopping to actually look at it feels like you've stumbled onto something real rather than another tourist tick-box.

The cross itself dates back centuries, marking an old route through what would have been open moorland. It's not flashy. No visitor centre, no interpretive boards, just weathered stone and the quiet of the Ribble Valley around you. History types will appreciate it for what it represents - a piece of medieval or early modern wayfinding that's somehow survived while everything else changed. The setting's actually rather lovely, with decent views across to Beacon Fell if you're there on a clear day.

There's no admission charge because there's nothing to charge for - you park nearby and walk over. Takes ten minutes maximum to have a proper look, take photos, read whatever remains of any inscriptions. It's free, it's accessible, and it requires no planning whatsoever.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming on its own, but walkers doing the longer Ribble Valley circuit will find it a natural waypoint. On its own? Brief stop.
