Isleham Lime Kilns

The lime kilns at Isleham are what's left of an industrial past that most people drive straight past without noticing. Three brick kilns sit in a field just east of Ely, their squat chimneys and weathered arches telling the story of 19th-century lime production that once kept the Fenland building trade going. You can walk right up to them - they're accessible and free, which is the best kind of history.

What strikes you first is how solid they still are, despite the weather. The kilns were fed with chalk from the local pits and burnt to create lime for mortar and plaster. The industrial heritage crowd will find them genuinely absorbing - there's something compelling about standing in front of actual Victorian engineering that still has its scars and original brickwork. If your kids are old enough to understand cause and effect (probably eight onwards), they'll get something from it. Younger ones might lose interest after ten minutes.

It's a proper quick stop - twenty minutes maximum, half an hour if you're thorough. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, which either feels refreshingly honest or frustratingly sparse depending on your mood. The site works best as part of a broader Fenland wander rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with a circuit around Ely's cathedral and you've got a decent afternoon. If you're camping nearby at Trelander, it's close enough for a morning bike ride before breakfast. Best visited on a clear day when the brick really glows.
