Joe's Hill

Joe's Hill is a proper chunk of woodland just outside Fakenham, the kind of place where you can actually lose the noise of the world for a bit. It's forest walking at its most straightforward - nothing fancy, just trees, paths, and the occasional shaft of light through the canopy that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the caravan.

The woodland here is genuinely decent for Norfolk. You get a sense of what the landscape looked like before it was all flattened for farming. The paths are decent underfoot and there's enough variation that an hour's wander doesn't feel like you're going in circles. It's the kind of spot where you can either make it a proper hike or just potter about for twenty minutes if the weather turns.

Families with younger kids will get on fine here - there's space to run about and the paths are clear enough that you won't lose anyone. Serious walkers might find it a bit compact for a full morning out, but it works brilliantly as a warm-up or a wind-down between other activities.

It sits well with a holiday at Kelling Heath, just five miles away, giving you somewhere to stretch your legs without driving off to the coast. Free to visit, open whenever - just the sort of low-key Norfolk forest that doesn't require planning, just turning up in decent boots. Best visited early morning if you want the place to yourself.
