John Coles Park

The River Avon cuts through John Coles Park like it owns the place, and honestly, it does. This nature reserve just outside Chippenham is a proper slice of Wiltshire countryside - the kind of spot where you're more likely to spot a kingfisher than another person, especially if you time it right.

It's essentially woodland and riverside habitat rolled into one. You get access to walking trails that follow the water's edge, and the birdwatching is genuinely decent here. The park's managed for wildlife, not Instagram moments, which means it stays relatively quiet and feels a bit wilder than your average council green space.

This one's ideal if you're staying at any of the nearby caravan sites - Plough Lane is barely a mile away, and The Moors Campsite isn't much further. It's the sort of place where families can let kids burn off energy on the trails without worrying about crowds, and serious walkers will appreciate the river scenery without the tourist infrastructure.

I'd suggest going early morning for the best wildlife action. The light through the trees is proper beautiful then too. Realistically, you're looking at a couple of hours here unless you're doing a longer riverside walk through the area. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared.

Not a major draw on its own, but paired with a week based at one of the local caravan parks, it's a genuinely worthwhile addition to your itinerary. Chippenham's got shops and pubs if you need them afterwards.
