John’s Wood

John's Wood sits just outside Northampton, a proper slice of ancient woodland that most locals walk past without a second glance. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - ancient oaks, winding paths, and not a coffee stand in sight.

This isn't a manicured country estate or a managed tourist attraction. It's working woodland, which means it feels lived-in, a bit wild around the edges. You get decent walking trails threading through the trees, though they can be muddy after rain - wear proper boots. The woodland itself tells the story of how the East Midlands looked before everything got flattened for farmland. Birdwatchers do quite well here, and if you're after somewhere to blow off steam with the kids for an hour or two, the trees provide enough to explore without it becoming a full day's commitment.

It's free to wander, which is refreshing. Head there in spring for the woodland floor covered in bluebells, or autumn when the light does something special through the canopy. Summer can feel a bit airless under all that leaf cover.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Lakeview Glamping or Bunkers Hill Farm are within five miles - John's Wood works as a morning outing before you settle in for the afternoon. Combine it with a walk around Northampton's town centre, about three miles away, and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Don't expect Instagram moments. Expect peace.
