Jones's Wood

The Cotswold Edge drops away sharply just outside Wotton-under-Edge, and Jones's Wood clings to those slopes like it's been there since the Norman conquest. It's a proper woodland walk - not manicured, not theme-parked, just trees, paths, and the occasional reminder that you're on decent inclines. Oak and beech mostly, with enough understory to feel enclosed even in summer when everything's thick with leaf.

This is walkers' territory. Families with young kids might manage an hour pottering about the easier paths, but anyone expecting a casual stroll should know upfront that the terrain's variable. The elevation changes mean your thighs will know about it, especially coming back down. There's genuine woodland atmosphere though - the kind you get when a place hasn't been flattened and resurfaced for tourists. Bring proper boots.

The wood sits within reach of several decent holiday spots. Wixoldbury Farm Glamping is barely two miles away and rated brilliantly, which makes this a solid add-on for a weekend walk before you settle into the evening. Pepper Pot Caravan Park is four and a half miles further afield but also well-regarded if you're basing yourself there.

Wotton-under-Edge itself has enough character to justify a morning here - market town vibes, decent high street, worth a coffee stop before or after. Jones's Wood works best as part of a broader Cotswold Edge day rather than a destination in itself, but if you're in the area and need proper woodland under your feet, it delivers.
